Book Review - Kasturba
Author: Tanaya Vyas
Publisher: Tulika Books
We all know Kasturba as Mahatma Gandhi's wife, but how many of us know Kasturba as an individual? Kasturba by Tanya Vyas is solely about Kasturba, the person behind Gandhi who encouraged him, who spoke against his ideals, who corrected his mistakes and more so, made Gandhi who he was.
The book starts with a classroom setup where the teacher announces that they are going to stage a play on Gandhi Jayanti. Nina, a young girl is chosen to enact the part of Kasturba. After having performed as many strong characters like Razia Sultan, Sita and Rani of Jhansi, Nina finds it very difficult to enact Kasturba as all she knows about the character is that she was Gandhi's wife.
The book covers Nina's discovery of the legacy of Kasturba with the help of her parents and grandparents. For those unaware, Kasturba was not just Gandhi's wife, but the backbone behind several movements in India, having even been jailed multiple times. She was a real fighter who fought and retained her individuality even after being overshadowed by Gandhi.
This book is published by Tulika books and is powerfully illustrated in a minimalist manner by the illustrator.
