In Conversation with the Brands We Love - Meet Jhelum of "Khela"

Today, we are in conversation with Jhelum, the founder of Khela- a traditional yet chic clothing brand at The Nestery.

Hi, I am Jhelum, I am a post-graduate in social sciences with 15+ years of experience working in the corporate world. I started my own venture 2-3 years ago. I was no different in feeling skeptical in the beginning, but today when I look back, this journey has been one of the best decisions of my life.

How was Khela conceived?

I used to live and work in London for close to a decade, during this time, my baby was born. While looking for kidswear, I felt a little disappointed at the dearth of quality kidswear labels in the international market with an Indian origin, despite India’s rich textile heritage. Therefore, when we relocated back to India, I decided to start something on my own.

With my love for textiles and vision to showcase Indian craftsmanship - a sustainable, proudly made in India brand was born.

Khela means ‘to play’ in most Indian languages. We aim to create classic clothing in which kids can run, jump and play and yet look effortlessly chic.

What makes Khela unique?

It’s the design approach. We use traditional Indian art and craft and give it a modern twist and finish. For example, in our Warli collection, we have used ‘Warli’, a traditional art form of the Warli tribe from Maharashtra, across various garments by creating Warli embroideries, Warli buttons, etc.

What would you say are Khela’s values?

Delivering sustainability and slow fashion through Indian craftsmanship.

Why is Khela at The Nestery?

Your love for quality in every step and of course kids.
