Meet Aparna Das of nuaa designs and "bhutkun"

Meet Aparna Das, of @nuaadesigns – you’ve seen their dohars and bed sets, and very soon, you will meet “bhutkun”! Scroll down for a sneak peek!⠀

nuaa and bhutkun! Such interesting names! How were they born?⠀

After my parents settled in Secunderabad, we set up nuaa to explore the dying craft of hand block printing. We have our own hand block printing, tailoring and embroidery unit here and a small passionate team who love to work with patterns, colours, Indian textures and textiles.⠀

nuaa means a drape for ladies in Maithili, my mother tongue. My mother & I started nuaa purely out of passion for everything Indian, craft-based and hand made. ⠀

At nuaa, we’ve designed and hand block printed sarees, dupattas, stoles and products for home. Our logo is inspired by Mithila art and was created by my mother and me.⠀

When I became a parent, armed with an understanding of what will work for kidswear, we started working on bhutkun, a range of comfortable and wearable clothing for children.⠀

Children are lovingly called bhutkun in Maithili and we have very lovingly created kurtas, pants, skirts, angrakhas and lehengas for your bhutkun that we will be launching at The Nestery very soon.⠀

What makes bhutkun and nuaa unique?⠀

bhutkun is rooted in traditional Indian craft, contemporary, wearable, and comfortable. All our motifs and blocks are crafted in-house, our colours are kid-friendly and we’ve carefully selected soft and breathable handloom cotton for babies who like to run around and generally keep busy. Every wash will only make them softer.⠀

What are nuaa’s values?⠀

Hand made, sustainable, contemporary and gender-neutral, yet rooted in traditional Indian craft.⠀

Tell us a little bit about you, Aparna.⠀

I am a lawyer by education, but I gave up being a corporate slave to start nuaa and I’ve never been happier. Currently, I’m working on growing nuaa & raising our daughter. ⠀

Why list at The Nestery?⠀

I’ve known Vaishnavi for aeons! I’ve seen The Nestery grow from an idea into this niche ecosystem. Vaishnavi's parenting techniques and professional ethics are an integral part of The Nestery and I am happy to be a part of it!
