Republic Day Inspired Activities for Toddlers/Preschoolers
Republic Day is right around the corner. Although Republic Day denotes the day we adopted our Indian constitution that made us a democratic nation. As children, the best memories of Republic day come from pinning up the flag on your clothes, singing the national anthem in unison, speakers blaring out patriotic songs, flag hoisting, and most importantly the republic parade and its pageantry.
To explain a republic may be a tad difficult to a toddler/preschooler but we can introduce small concepts like the flag, a sense of belonging, symbols of the republic and such.
Here is a list of 5 simple, minimal prep activities that you can do with your toddler/preschooler inspired by India's Republic Day.
March Past and Salute: To set up this activity, you need masking tape, and the floor and marching songs n audio. Paste the masking tape on the floor for some march past and salute.
Benefits: Gross motor skills, Control of movement
The Balance Game: To set up this activity, you need a set of balancing owls or Flockmen. You can teach your toddler/preschooler to balance these into different shapes a'la' bikers on the Republic Day Parade
Benefits: Creating a sense of balance, Understanding weights and counterweights.
Pinning the flag to the board: Using a board peg to pin a flag into a cork board or a thermocol sheet.
Benefits: Fine motor skills, Estimation, Hand-eye coordination, and Application of force
Colour Discrimination: To set up this activity, you need a paper plate, child-safe colours, small pegs. Create a colour wheel with Saffron, White, Green, and Blue. Ask the toddler/preschooler to identify each colour and peg the wheel accurately.
Benefits: Colour discrimination, Fine motor skills, building up the strength of the hand.
Introducing National Symbols: To set up this activity, you need two sets of images of national symbols such as Lotus, Peacock, Hockey, Ashoka Pillar etc. You can set this up as a three part lesson. First introduce the symbol, then allow the toddler to match the images using the second set. Lastly, ask them independently about the national symbols without the imagery prompt.
