How to Restore the World: Earth Day 2021

How to Restore the World: Earth Day 2021

April 22 is Earth Day—and we are celebrating it for the 51st time today. Earth Day is celebrated globally, with over 192 countries actively participating to help make the earth cleaner and safer. The theme this year is ‘Restore our Earth’ and it focuses primarily on natural processes, emerging green technologies, and innovative thinking that can restore the ecosystems of the world.
We are not going to get into why the Earth needs restoration. We will also not discuss the hazards of continuing to live the same way. We will not remind you that this is the only habitable planet we know of (as yet), and that our children deserve to live in a healthy world. We will not get into the debate on whether climate change is real.
We will, however, talk about the dire need to do something to restore the Earth. We will talk about the measures we can take in our personal capacity to make the world healthier, greener, and safer.
1. Segregate — The world is grappling with a huge crisis when it comes to waste management. Mindless consumption and production have filled our landfills and oceans with tonnes and tonnes of toxic waste that contaminates water and spreads deadly diseases. Ideally, we would reduce consumption and reuse resources where we can; but just each of us segregating our own household waste can also help heal the world to a great extent. My child has loved sorting since she was a baby. She still does. Turning this into a learning opportunity, let's segregate food waste, plastic waste, paper waste, bio waste, and aluminium waste.
2. Refuse — In addition to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, teach your child to Refuse single-use items like straws, cups, paper napkins, etc. Remember, monkey see, monkey do. They will not refuse if you don't.
3. Grow food — This may not be practical for many people for many reasons, but if you can, grow some food. Even on the balcony or windowsill. With children forced to stay indoors, gardening is a great hobby to have, and a great way to bond. Needless to say, it’s also a great way to contribute to the environment.
Apart from these, can you think of other ways you can help restore the Earth, especially if it involves the child? We’d love to hear.
