It surfaced under the name “Moksh path” again in the 13th century during the time of Sant Gyandev. It was intended as a game to instruct young children in morals and values, with each square representing a virtue/ fault. It was later colonised by the English and modified in its current avatar.
As children play this game, they effortlessly absorb all the basic sight words needed for simple reading and writing like – in, of, above and so on. They hence can start reading small pictorial story books early.
